could someone explain this article to me? Stunted redwoods, flooded campgrounds and a mighty Yosemite waterfall reduced to a trickle. Those are a few of the dire consequences facing 10 California parks over the next century because of rapidly changing climate patterns, according to a new study by an environmental think tank. "We're trying to illustrate that the ways we affect the climate affect the places we love," said Stephen Saunders, a former deputy at the U.S. Department of the Interior under President Bill Clinton and president of the nonprofit Rocky Mountain Climate Organization in Denver. "It's not just about ice caps and polar bears. This is going to hit us at home." The report released Tuesday by Saunders' group and the Natural Resources Defense Council, titled "California's National Parks in Peril: the Threats of Climate Disruption," found that unless humans slash carbon emissions in the near term, some of the Golden State's natural wonders will disappear over the next 90 years. Ripple effect of heat The main culprit is a steadily warming atmosphere stoked by a cauldron of heat-trapping pollution. If the use of fossil fuels continues to increase at a moderate clip, average temperatures in Yosemite National Park could climb by 7.5 degrees in the latter third of the 21st century. Temperatures in Muir Woods National Monument and Point Reyes National Seashore could increase by about 6 degrees - making them higher than historic temperatures in Santa Barbara. Highs in places such as Joshua Tree National Park and the Mojave National Preserve could top the blistering temperatures normally found in Death Valley, the hottest spot in North America. Those few degrees have drastic implications for water supply, vegetation growth, insect infestation, loss of animal habitat and wildfire risk, Saunders reported. Many parks affected Among the study's most startling predictions: -- Joshua trees, which need low seasonal temperatures to produce seeds, could disappear from the namesake Southern California park. -- Beaches, wetlands and picnic areas at Point Reyes National Seashore could be inundated as sea levels rise between 2 and 4.7 feet. -- Less snow and more rain could mean earlier, longer and more frequent dry spells for Yosemite Falls. -- Fewer foggy days in Muir Woods and Redwood National Park could limit the growth of sequoias. The 34-page report relied on weather modeling and greenhouse gas data from the California Climate Change Center, U.S. National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey and UC San Diego, among others. In addition to Tuesday's report, the group has studied climate change impacts on parks across Virginia and in several states in the Western United States. One of Saunders' most staggering conclusions is that the glaciers in Montana's Glacier National Park could melt in the next two decades. Tuesday's findings echo those outlined by others, including researchers in the Bay Area, the U.S. government and the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In fact, many scientists long involved in those efforts now believe Earth's atmosphere is warming even more quickly than thought just a few years ago. Measuring impacts A California Energy Commission paper last year concluded that the state is already experiencing measurable impacts because of climate change, including more frequent, longer and larger wildfires, a warming Lake Tahoe, a shorter winter rainy season, and falling snowpack levels. Both studies contend climate change poses grave threats to California's economy. Visitors to California's national parks, for instance, spend about $1.2 billion each year. Climate change also has taken on political urgency this fall, as California voters will decide next week the fate of AB32, the state's landmark 2006 measure that intends to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020, returning them to 1990 levels. Opponents want to freeze the regulations with Proposition 23, saying moving forward with limits on greenhouse gases will stifle job growth in California amid a sluggish economy. Supporters insist AB32's policies will boost a burgeoning green technology industry and stave off some of the most devastating effects of climate change. Regardless of the election's outcome, most experts agree that the pollution humans have pumped into the air for generations will be with us for some time. "Even a scenario that drastically curtails emissions of greenhouse gases may still lead to undesirable trends in warming and sea level rise," the energy commission report stated i rly need help :P please thanks :)

1st time traveling to west of USA (SF, LA, LV & Colorado)? Hi, this would be my first time traveling to the west of USA, and I need some help. I would have 4 whole weeks in total, and would like to cover the 4 main locations (SF, LA, LV & Colorado). I would be coming from St. Louis. In Colorado, I would like to visit the yellowstone. In SF, I would want to travel up north to redwood national park. In LV, I would like to visit the Grand Canyon. It will just be 2 of us traveling in total. So, 1. How much time should I allocate for each of the 4 main locations (SF, LA, LV & Colorado)? 2. What is the best way to travel from one main location to the other? ( I would probably be taking a flight from St. Louis to Colorado, and then another flight from colorado to one of the 3 locations)?

What has more amazing scenic areas, Sequoia Natl. Park or Redwoods National Park? I can only go to one.? I am going to San Francisco & Yosemite. I have time to drive to either Sequoi or Redwoods. In either case I would only go for 1 day, no long hikes, just short trails. Which one should I go to?

Al dia siguiente fuimos de excursion en un rastro. Una vez que llegamos a la cima del rastro nosotros y el conjunto arriba una merienda campestre. Habia un paisaje hermoso. I just want to hear some of your opinions about the National Forests. What are your experiences at these places. We really do not care how far we drive, we just want a good feeling of adventure. which would be better for a roadtrip through the midwest and westcoast? ok so my family and i are taking a road trip from south Texas to Washington... we are planning on driving so we can hit some hot spots like the Big bend, Grand canyon, Yellowstone, Redwood, Yosemite, Arches National park etc. we are going to Washington so see a family member, but since none of us have gotten to do go anywhere really exciting, we decided going to these places would make it a more memorable family vacay... but one thing we cant decide yet is if we should rent 2 RV'S so we dont have to pay for hotels, but double up on gas... or go with some 15 passenger vans.. so we save on gas (ya right) but have to pay for hotels... what would some of you do? thanks!!!
What is so great about the USA, "The Greatest Nation on Earth"? Is it the incredible natural attractions like The Rockies and Mount Rushmore, in my wife's home state of South Dakota that you love? Or is it the unique man made wonders like Las Vegas & Hollywood that show the greatness of America? I added a poll on the bottom of today's blog, and Glacier National Park, The Rockies and Mount Rushmore have absolutely NO votes yet, as of 8 pm EST. So far Grand Canyon is tied with the Bush Adminstration with 4 picks each...with the Redwood Forest just behind with 3 votes, followed by "the five Great Lakes" with 2. Yellowstone and Las Vegas have one vote each. Just for fun, put in your "2 points worth" at the bottom of today's blog, or comment on a wonder I've overlooked. Why do conservatives oppose conservation? When he was Governor of California, Ronald Reagan worked to remove the giant redwood from the protected list so they could be clearcut. He insisted that most of the pollution in the forest actually came from the trees, and when challenged pointed at all the needles and cones on the forest floor. When he was President he appointed James Watt to cabinet to dismantle the EPA and sell off mineral rights in national parks. Reagan claimed to be a conservative, but what did he conserve? Now his spiritual successors are screaming against any pollution control at all, and raging at anybody who gives any credence to environmentalists.
Is it possible to do a "green" roadtrip? My green credentials were recently called into question because of a blurb in my Yahoo bio saying I loved roadtrips. What I meant was that I travel to places like Kings Canyon National Park, Death Valley, northern California redwood grooves, Anza -Borrego State Park -- places where you can't take the train, or a bus unless you're on a group tour -- and if you've ever travelled on a bus you know they're not "green!" -- and hitchhiking is illegal and would be cumbersome with all my gear. Sometimes a friend or two comes along, and of course we carpool! Rather than add to the bio, I deleted the reference, but I love to visit our wildlands and yet I do want to be green in doing so. My car gets above-average gas milage, I don't take lots of side trips, and once I get there I'm using my own two feet to get around. But is there anything else I can do to make my road trips "green?"
WEST COAST must sees and dont sees? Hi In less than two weeks, we are leaving for a trip. Our driving plan is this - go down Interstate 5 from Northern Washington to Anaheim California where we will spend some time at Disney. Then we will head to Big Sur via Hwy 101 and Hwy 1. We will stop at Solvang and Mendocino. From Big Sur we will go to Carmel and Monterey, then San Francisco and the Redwood National Recreation Area in Northern California. From there, we will stay on the coast stopping in to visit the Dinosaur Park (?) and the Sand Dunes. Continuing the coast to Astoria then back to Interstate 5 for a fast dash home. My question comes to this. Along this pathway, do you have any suggestions for places to STOP AND SEE???? We have 2 children (10 and 12) in our traveling party along with an elementary teacher. Have you toured the Dunes? Do you have any reccomendations? Do you have any words as to places to AVOID?
triginometry, need help asap =(? 1) A 5 metre ladder is leaning against a wall. The distance from the wall to the bottom of the ladder is 1.125 metres. Calculate the angle the ladder makes with the ground 2) The length of a rectangle is 36 cm and the diagonal makes an angle of 40 degrees with the side. Find the width of this rectangle 3) The angle of elevation to the top of a flagpole from the ground is 60 degrees when a person stands 4.5 metres from the pole. How high is this flagpole? 4) From a point 150 metres from a building, the angle of elevation to the top of the building is 52 degrees. How high is the building? 5) The most massive living thing on earth today is a California redwood tree named "General Sherman" in Sequoia National Park. The tree is 85 metres high, measures 25 metres around the base and its bark is 60 cm thick. What is the angle of elevation to the top of the tree if you are standing 120 metres away from the tree? 6) In a square the diagonals are congruent and bisect each other at right angles. Calculate the length of a diagonal if the length of one of the sides is 16 cm.

Why are parks and forest in southern California so ugly? Like the Angeles National Forest. It's not a forest. It's filled with shrub, rocks, dried sand. It's ugly. Trees in southern california are ugly. you have to go to northern california to see those beautiful redwoods.

Washington, Oregon and California!? My family and I live in Washington and are all going to be Traveling to California by car. We want to visit a few places on the way and so far we want to go to Crater Lake and The Redwood forest. What are some other places we can go? Any fun small towns or other national parks, fish hatchery's, Lakes, Museums that would be interesting to visit? Oh and some nice but not too expensive hotels we can stay at or Bed and Breakfasts? Thanks!
Need help planning my road trip? My dad and I are driving from northwestern Pennsylvania to the Pacific Northwest and back this summer and are looking for places/things to see. We already plan to see the obvious places like Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Glacier NP, Seattle, Oregon Coast, Redwoods and Rocky Mountain NP. What are some of the lesser known places (state parks, national parks, or anything that's just plain weird) and good scenic routes that aren't to far out of the way? Also, we have about 3 to 3 1/2 weeks, give or take, to do this trip so we are trying to save as much time as possible. Is it better to start the trip with a lot of driving (I-80 west towards Denver, then to redwood, head up the coast towards seattle, then take I-90 as the major route heading back, stopping at glacier, yellowstone and badlands) or should we go the opposite way (I-90 to badlands, to yellowstone, and so on) and put the pedal to the metal coming home? Is there really a difference between the two interstates? Is one more pleasant to drive than another? Does one have more of a 'going out west' type of feel than another? Or are they generally about the same? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
"Why does God allow so much joy and happiness and prosperity in the World?" ? If Hitler and Stalin and Mao's evil "prove" that God can't exist, then do Bach and Michelangelo and Shakespeare and Beethoven prove that God does? Why does God allow Glacier National Park? Yosemite? Grand Canyon? Chocolate? Donuts? Music? Deep dish pizza? What kind of God created a world with sunsets, and rainbows and redwoods and diamonds and long white beaches with clear blue water? Why does God allow people to fall in love? Why does God allow us to make great art? What about all the billions of children that aren't sick and who's parents love and care for them? How can this be? Nero... HUMANS made the Grand Canyon? Who got the contract for that? Haliburton? and which company makes the redwoods and the sunsets? Industrial Light and Magic? And where do humans get their appreication of beauty from? What kind of God would create a being with an inherant appreication for beauty, and a world full of beauty to appreciate?
