As an Oregon resident I do not have to pay sales tax in Washington. So why do I have to pay tax in California?
I live in Portland, OR and I often make purchases in Washington. I dont have to pay tax if I show my ID. In Crescent City, CA I didn't get charged sales tax after showing my ID, but everyone in LA thinks I have to pay sales tax. Are the northern cities in CA that are close to oregon breaking tax law? Or is all of southern CA charging taxes they shouldn't? If I buy a car in CA I don't have to pay the taxes on it, and I dont get charged for sales tax in Northern CA when I show my Oregon ID. Is the majority of Southern CA charging taxes they shouldn't?

- did you use there roads? do you want their police to help you if your being robbed? Do you want their paramedics to rescue you if your hurt? If your car catches on fire, do you want their fire department to put it out? If you don't want to pay the tax, stay in your state. I'm not saying this to be rude, just want you to understand.
- Because the sales tax in Washington replaces their income tax. You do not have an income in Washington, so you don't have to pay the sales tax. California has both an income and sales tax. The sales tax in California is to obtain money from any one who buys anything in California. The difference is the "intent" of the sales tax law in each state.
- WA and OR have a reciprocity agreement that exempts OR residents from most WA sales taxes. CA has no such agreement with OR. CA does not collect CA sales tax on non-resident motor vehicle sales. CA collects sales tax on all other taxable goods. The NoCAL sellers who are letting you buy without collecting tax are not in compliance with CA law.
- Washington is the ONLY state that has a sales tax that doesn't require residents of states without sales tax to pay sales tax. Businesses in Northern California may just be lowering the price for Oregonians so not to lose the business. But they aren't required to. The businesses in Southern California are abiding by the law.
