what are some vacation getaway spots like montauk?

i want to go somewhere with my girlfriend this summer that is like montauk. Ya know like a nice beach and nice little town or whatever. My only prob is that montauk is other than like sightseeing and eating there isnt much to do. it seems very secluded from other towns since it is at the tip of the island. i want to go somewhere like montauk, but that has other towns within like twenty minute driving range of it. i live on long island and dont really want to drive anywhere further than 4 hours.

1. I know what you mean - not much around when you get that far out. Lots of people go to Shelter Island - I have heard, never been on it myself. North fork has a number of small villages, but I don't know about beach facilities. You might consider doing a Google search for beach areas in Connecticut and Rhode Island. A ferry ride would take you to CT fairly quickly and you could go from there.
