Is the "perfect beach" from the movie with Leonardo Dicaprio a place that tourists can visit?
If you've ever seen the movie "The Beach" with Leonardo Dicaprio, you'll know that the movie is about a "perfect" beach surrounded by a group of islands near Malaysia, totally secluded, and utterly gorgeous. I heard a rumor that these islands were struck hard during the recent tsunami's in that area and that the perfect "beach" was also ruined! Say it ain't so!

- the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will be able to confirm that for you; i think it's the Phi Phi Island near Phuket Island - far away from malaysia.
- I agree with Taiki, I also think it is Phi phi Island resort in Thailand. Although was destroyed by the resent asian tsunami, it has now recovered, some establishments are now operating.
- It wasn't only the tsunami that hit the beach. It was also the cursed film company that decided that paradise wan't good enough and dug it up, moved trees and more. The ****tards. They used CGI to modify the view, but beach in the movei The Beach was filmed on Ko Phi Phi, which is an easy boat trip from Ko Samui. I went there some 6 years before the movie and it was staggeringly beautiful. A woman with me started crying when she saw it because - she said - she's never seen anything so beautiful and knew she wouldn't ever see such a site again in her lifetime. I remember it as it was. Accommodation, restuarants and all the blight of mass tourism were built on Phi Phi. That is why I have never gone back and I just remember it as it was. I now go to another unspoiled tiny island. It's not a secret but not many people go there and I don't tell anyone about it in the hope it stays unspoiled. Sorry - I sound a bit bitter. But those film makers dug up the actual beach to make the damned film. It was staggeringly amazingly stunningly beautiful. Thanks to Sonofskip for the correction. I have removed the mistaken geographical information. My memory was at fault. Too many magic mushrooms maybe?
- Yes it was on Ko Phi Phi that they filmed The Beach, in Krabi provence. Sorry Pontac but I'll have to correct you - Phi Phi is NOT a boat ride from Ko Samui, unless you take the boat all the way around the bottom of Malaysia and up past Sumatra...Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand and Phi Phi is situated in the Amdaman Sea! ;)
- yes i've been there, went diving in the bay. But unlike in the film it is does not have cliffs all round it. Theres a big gap to the side where speed boats can come in. As a result, you get loads of people there during the day an it ruins the whole point. If you want to go there you get a ferry from Krabi to Phi Phi and then get smaller boat from there. If adventorous hire a long boat on phi phi for day (very cheap) and drive there yourself, otherwise get a speed boat. Also little beach with loads of monkeys on the way, so can stop off there as well.
- Just recently got back fro Ko Phi Phi. If you are trying to escape from the westernized world I would stay away. Way too many tourists. The island population seems to be dominated by Aussies (even the employees). I would suggest trying somewhere a bit less visited. If you are looking for Thai culture, I would say visit Chang Mai in the northern part of the country. I was in Thailand for a month and Chang Mai was definitely my favorite place.
