What would we do if China took out our satelites then invaded Taiwan?
Those people are fiercely independent, since most of them think of themselves not as Chinese by aborigional Taiwanese. The Communist take over of China during their diversion of us during the Korean War in 1950 threw us onto the side of Chang as he evacuated to what was called Formosa. I wonder if we would just stand by and let the invasion happen. Twenty years ago we would not have allowed this. Now that China is a world power (we don't like to admit that), we just might stand by and let them take the place over, rather than start throwing nukes around. In other words, we would not want to trade Taiwan for San Fransisco. By the way, the people there are wonderful, polite and giving. They are living in a paradise that is so beautiful I can see why the Chinese want to take it back. The East coast is a fascinating sea-side cliff. The west coast is one 375-mile long fantasy beach front. What more could one ask for?.....Or fight for?

- Chinese are well know to kill each other thru their history we are not like the Japanese which are good in cooperation try to to involved in another civil war again have truest things in a Chinese family will not get too bad
- China will not invade. Because Taiwan as a country is more valuable than an island.
- Not much we have a broken army we'd just have to watch.
- Bush Jr has put the US in a very weak position by having China hold part of the govt debt. When China wants in invaide Taiwan, they will tell our govt to keep out or they will call in the debt and wreck our economy.
- We have made a commitment to the Chinese people of Taiwan that if they are attacked by the mainland, we will attack. No one wants this, but I believe we would. Having just come from a visit to mainland China, I think that Taiwan will eventually have a relationship like Hong Kong and war will not happen. It may taken 20 years, but change will happen just as it is happening all over China.
- It depends. If we have a Republican administration we will do the right thing and defend Taiwan. A Democrat administration will accept campaign contributions from the Chinese government and do nothing.
- So long as China starts it, there would be no question. To not help would severely weaken all our other alliance in the region. Even if Taiwan started it, the US would still be obligated to respond in some way. The story of small democratic island fighting against overwhelming odds to maintain its independence from the giant authoritarian regime is too close to a Hollywood movie plot that it would certainly create a public outcry. The US military is still leaps ahead of China's and recently confirmed that it could still easily handle any situation to come up in the Pacific. Any conflict with China would be Naval and maybe you didn't notice, but most of those troops in Afghanistan and Iraq are Army. The US has the largest most advanced navy in the world. Japan, who also has stakes in Taiwan, has the second largest and advanced. As for satellites. It took China 7 months and 3 attempts to hit one. The US has hundreds of satillites and have been thinking of back up plans since the 1980's, the last time the US and Russia bothered to do the same thing. But the chances of a war are unlikely. If it did happen though, the US would be obligated to help, whoever started it and it would be over in a month (no occupation necessary.) Come on, we've been spying on the country for 60 years and China has wanted Taiwan for just as long; we know where they keep all their crap, and our guns are much bigger than their Russian hand-me-downs. (To the person below me, why do people keep thinking that China has leverage because it buys up our debt? So does Japan and India. Holding American debt is what keeps the Chinese currency low. If they were to sell it, their currency would rise and their export based economy would collapse.)
- well the Taiwanese people are Chinese people, they look alike, speak the same language. They will probably treat it like Hong Kong and Macao. I doubt there will be a war. And besides the US wouldn't really want to get involved, China hold the US's biggest debt, and their economy and goods depend of them so yea..
- Taiwan??? Look out your window, that's what China wants. And if you don't think they can have it, look at there economy vs. ours, look at their debt vs ours, and we know next to NOTHING about their military capabilities vs our stretched military. It's a matter of time.
